Students at the Minerva Area Christian School, along with their families, attended a Veterans Day service Friday, Nov. 11.

The service was led by James Scalf, a retired master chief of the U.S. Navy and chaplain at Crossroads Hospice.

Scalf spoke about the importance of Veterans Day, and explained to students how many veterans died for their freedoms.

"It's been a costly endeavor to gain our freedom and then keep it," he said.

Scalf's presentation was part of Crossroad's Honor Our Veterans recognition campaign, which aims to acknowledge and appreciate veterans in the community, while informing them of their right to hospice care.

Scalf also acknowledged veterans in the audience, calling them to the front for a certificate and a pinning ceremony, assisted by the veterans' children and grandchildren.
